Accredited Property Inspection

BOINZ accreditation recognises property inspectors and building surveyors who meet professional standards through formal training, assessment and peer review, with ongoing professional development and support.

What is an Accredited Property Inspector?

An Accredited Property Inspector is a BOINZ-recognised property and building inspection professional who has undergone formal training, assessment and peer review, and is required to maintain their professional standards on an ongoing basis.

Accredited Building Surveyors Programme
The Building Officials Institute of New Zealand (BOINZ) is the peak body representing all of these 3 interlinked building surveying disciplines. It is the only New Zealand based organisation capable of providing the necessary representative, tertiary and internationally linked training support to underpin such a comprehensive educational programme.

Building Surveyors generally work in 3 specific areas:

  • Local Government or Private Building Consent Authorities (BCAS) as Building Control Officers

  • Privately for specialised building investigations such as Building Code Compliance, Insurers etc.

  • Property inspections

The Accredited Building Surveyor (ABS) Programme provides assurance that the accredited individual has the knowledge, ethics and experience that set them apart within the building survey sector.

The individual will carry an accreditation identity card to demonstrate their commitment to the highest standard of work and a dedication to professional performance and improvement that will lift the profile and image of their profession. Customers should ask to see their identity cards.

Whether a home buyer, seller, real estate agent, broker or anyone connected to the sector, the public recognises the value of working with an Accredited Building Surveyor when obtaining a residential property report.

Buyer, Beware! If a Real Estate Agent recommends a property inspector, it should act as a warning sign that the inspector may not be independent.

What is Accreditation?

The Accredited Property Inspector Programme is managed by the National Accreditation Division of the Building Officials Institute of New Zealand (BOINZ). It provides formal industry recognition of the education, competence and ongoing professionalism demonstrated by accredited members undertaking residential property inspections.

To achieve accreditation, individuals must successfully complete the required training and undergo a rigorous assessment process in accordance with the programme's standards. Accredited Property Inspectors are also required to participate in annual competency reviews to maintain their accreditation and demonstrate their ongoing commitment to professional excellence.
